Volleyball is the second most famous game all over the world after the soccer. Thus most of the people enjoy the game and play for recreation purpose. Some of them play indoor volleyball and few play beach volleyball as well. But a true fact is most of the people do not know the difference between beach volleyball and indoor volleyball. Most of the time the professionals only know the differences between indoor and beach volleyball. So this article is going to focus on the differences between indoor and beach volleyball. If you ask the differences to normal people, they will reply that the indoor volleyball is played in gym, volleyball court or in indoor stadiums and the beach volleyball is played on beaches, basically on the sand. But there have some major differences between them. The main differences are the rules of the games. I will discuss some major differences between these two types of game that might help you know the major differences easily. What Are The Common Differences Between Beach & Indoor Volleyball? Set of Rally Score: In the beach volleyball each match will be a set of three rally-scoring sets. On the other hand, the Indoor match will be a set of five rally-scoring sets. In beach volleyball, the first two sets are played to 21 points. The third set is played to 15. But in indoor, the first four sets are played to 30. The fifth set is played to 15. The court dimensions are also different in both cases. In the beach volleyball, the sand courts are 16 meters by 8 meters but the indoor courts are 18 meters by 9 meters. Side Change: In beach volleyball, a side change will occur after every seven points in the first two sets and every five points in the third set. The side change will be direct without delay. On the other hand in indoor a side change will occur after every game. In the fifth game, another side change occurs after one team gets to eight.
To legally double the first ball when using finger action (i.e. setting), you have to be defending a hard-driven attack. That means you are not receiving a serve. It also means you are defending an opponent's attack on a ball that is moving fast enough that the referee can judge that you didn't have time to play the ball any other way. Volleyball Setting Rule: There are some differences regarding restriction on setting the ball over the volleyball net. In the beach volleyball, the setting has to be perpendicular to your body. An exception is made if a teammate accidentally sets a ball over the net. On the other hand in the indoor, there are no rules against it, as long as it not a carry or a throw. In the beach volleyball tipping is illegal. Fingers can't be used to tip a ball over the net. Palms, the heel of the hand, locked straight fingers, gnarled fingers or the back of the hand can be used to dink the ball over for short shots. But in the indoor volleyball fingers may be used to tip; hand should be above your head to avoid a carry or throw over the net. Both in beach volleyball and indoor volleyball, teams must have a two-point advantage to win a set, and no point cap will be used. Court Dimensions: Besides rules, there are more differences between beach volleyball and indoor volleyball. Beach volleyball is more difficult than indoor volleyball. Not because of the different court dimensions, fewer players or the new rules about where on the hand you can hit the ball. Instead, the outdoor elements the sun, heat, wind and unstable ground are toughest challenges. Because of playing on and the beach volleyball becomes very difficult to move and hit the ball. Present of Sand: You can jump accordingly because of the sand. In beach volleyball, you can’t have proper timing. You have to struggle a lot with your timing as well as jumping. If you want to be a successful player on the beach then you need to practice and exercise of moving your legs freely on the sand. Final Words: The difference between this two-game is not huge, but there was a slight difference between these two games. I already mentioned a few common differences that will help you understand the game properly and enjoy the game as well.
